Position Details


Shift: Shifts vary based upon daily job assignment (for example: 5:00a-1:00p, 5:30a-1:30p, 7:45a-3:45p, 10:30a-6:30p).  Dietary is staffed 7 days a week. This is for a Part-time, 30 hours per week role.

Position Purpose:

Prepares, cooks, and portions food from established recipes, formulas and menu cycles within applicable regulations for all customers including those on therapeutic diets. Ensures proper temperatures and sanitation standards are adhered to during preparation, cooking, serving, and cooling; documenting evidence supporting this.  Operates and monitors condition of commercial cooking equipment and appliances. 

 

Additional: This individual may be cross-trained to perform a variety of routine clerical tasks within the Dietary Department. These tasks could include: Records data for record keeping, assists patients with menu selection, and checks tray line. May also assist in gathering patient information such as food, religious, and cultural preferences.

 

Requirements:

EDUCATION:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

CERTIFICATION:

  • Completion of Food Handler Certification within 30 days of hire. 
  • Food Service Sanitation Certification within one year of hire.
  • Completion of ServSafe Allergens Certification within 90 days of hire. 

PRIOR EXPERIENCE:

  • 1-2 years cooking experience in a healthcare/institutional setting is preferred.

PROFICIENCIES:

  • Ability to read, understand, and follow recipes including weights and measurements, menu, and other written and/or verbal department and hospital communications.
  • Ability to perform basic math skills.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to produce tasty, attractive, and diet appropriate food in a safe, timely manner for all customers.
  • Ability to learn and perform responsibilities during codes such as for fire and others. 
  • Performs assigned duties with attention to detail, speed, accuracy, follow-through, courtesy and cooperativeness.
  • Ability to deal with internal and external customers (some of whom will require high levels of patience, tact, and diplomacy to defuse anger).
  • Good interpersonal communication skills.  
  • Ability to anticipate customer's needs; ability to respond promptly and acknowledge all customers.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality.  Ability to follow oral and written instructions and established procedures. 
  • Ability to use proper body mechanics when lifting, pushing or pulling.
  • Ability to adhere to hospital’s values and standards of behavior (REACH – Respect, Excellence, Accountability, Compassion and Helping Support Others).

KNOWLEDGE OF:

  • Equipment and appliances used in food preparation techniques.
