Position Details

 

Position: Surgical Technologist / Central Service Technician

 

Department:  Surgery / Central Service                                                       

 

Status: Full time, Day shift

                                   

Shift: Monday – Friday; Shifts will be scheduled based upon surgical case schedule

 

Position Purpose: 

The Surgical Technologist (Scrub Tech) handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.  He/she has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.  He/she has the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field.

 

The Central Service Technician coordinates and maintains activities relating to the inspection, assembling, and packaging of surgical instruments and equipment and medical/surgical materials according to established standards and procedures to ensure a sterile and functional supply of materials.  Central Service Technician performs other duties as assigned or required.

 

Qualifications: 

 

Education: Currently enrolled in or has Satisfactorily completed an accredited program in Surgical Technology (Scrub Tech). Evidence of relevant experience, skill, and/or training will be considered in lieu of successful completion of or enrollment in accredited program.

 

Certification: CPR trained through the American Heart Association HealthCare Provider.  Prefer national certification upon completion of Surgical Technology program.

 

Prior Experience: Six months of prior experience is preferred but will train on-the-job. 

 

Proficiencies: Computer skills in a Windows environment.  Instrument and equipment recognition and their proper preparation.

 

Skills & Abilities: Ability to assist doctors and nurses before, during and after a procedure or operation; Ability to anticipate the needs of staff in preparing and passing surgical materials during a procedure or operation; Ability to operate equipment according to standards; Assist in accounting for surgical instruments during a procedure of operation; Report usages during procedures; Works cooperatively, effectively and calmly in emergency medical situations; Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted during the course of work; Numeric and clerical ability.

 

Knowledge of: Knowledge of aseptic techniques, sterilization and maintenance procedures and infection control practices applicable to surgical procedures and processes; Knowledge of various medical supplies used in an acute care facility; Knowledge of medical terminology; Knowledge of gowning, scrubbing, and gloving procedures; Knowledge of universal procedures for handling blood and bodily fluids.

 

Special Training: Central Service Technician class is preferred.

 

Other: Ability to use proper body mechanics when lifting, pushing or pulling.
