Position: Lab Tech – MT/MLT

Department: Laboratory

Status: PRN (as needed)

Shift: Shifts are typically 12 hour shifts, 7:00 pm – 7:00 am, varying shifts may be available.

The Laboratory department operates on day, evening, night and weekend shifts. Applicant should expect to occasionally pick up shifts outside of night shift hours. Pinckneyville Community Hospital is in operation 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Requirements: High school diploma or GED. Associate in Applied Science - Medical Laboratory Technology. Certified MT or MLT (ASCP) or equivalent. Must have good multi-tasking skills and ability to communicate in a professional manner. Prefer 1-2 years of work experience.

Position Purpose: Perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease, including (but not limited to) the areas of Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology, Serology, and Phlebotomy.

Responsibilities: Perform duties of a phlebotomist, EKG technician and MT or MLT. Other duties include:

  • Collect blood samples from patients such as drawing blood from veins by vacuum tube, syringe, or butterfly venipuncture methods. Occasionally drawing blood from capillaries by dermal puncture (heel and/or finger sticks).
  • Accurate completion of Chain of Custody drug screens (DOT and non-DOT) from start to finish (paperwork, payment, form completion, policy per company, collection of specimen, etc.)
  • Maintain, calibrate, and clean medical laboratory equipment.
  • Accurately uploads EKGs from a flash drive into Epiphany Cardioserver; distributes the EKGs into the correct physician's folder; and distributes final over read copies to medical records and the appropriate physician.
  • Communicates professionally and effectively to provide optimal patient care.
  • Accurately orders patients in the lab LIS system; ensuring appropriate diagnosis provided (or ABN signing) if a Medicare patient.
  • Performs and maintains QC and QA procedures for all test performed.
  • Accurately orders, results and monitors timeliness of lab tests sent to the reference lab.
  • Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids, in accordance with applicable laws, standards and policies.
  • Dispose of contaminated sharps, in accordance with applicable laws, standards, and policies.
  • Patients are properly identified in accordance with hospital policy prior to processing of patient.
  • Accurately performs EKG testing on a routine and STAT basis.
  • Accurately performs and reports the procedures listed in Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, Urinalysis, Blood Bank, Microbiology and Serology Manuals.
