Postion: Certified Coder
Department: Health Information Management (HIM
Status: Full-time
Shift: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:00pm
*Potential opportunity for remote work with required on-site attendance on day per week, subject to approval and ongoing discretion of the HIM Director based on operaitonal needs and performance expectations
Position Purpose:
Assigns codes for diagnoses, treatments, and procedures according to the appropriate classification system for outpatient encounters. Utilizes technical coding principles to assign appropriate ICD-9-CM diagnoses and ICD-9-CM/CPT-4 procedures and/or appropriate ICD-10-CM diagnoses and ICD-10-PCS/CPT-4 procedures. Extracts required information from source documentation and enters into encoder and abstracting system. Reviews charges to ensure appropriate charge capture, and reviews system-generated error reports to correct or complete missing data elements. Assists in implementing solutions to reduce back-end billing errors. Assigns appropriate evaluation/management levels for professional services. Ensures all services documented in the patient’s chart are coded with appropriate diagnoses and procedure codes. When services are not documented appropriately, seeks to attain proper documentation in a timely manner. Abides by the Standards of Ethical Coding as set forth by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) or American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) and adheres to official coding guidelines..

Education: High school diploma required. Associates Degree in Health Information Technology preferred.
Experience: 2 years’ experience in hospital outpatient coding is strongly preferred. At least one year of Inpatient Medical Coding experience is preferred
Certification: AHIMA or AAPC coding credential (RHIA, RHIT, CCS or CPC) required.
Proficiencies: Keyboarding, Microsoft Excel, and use of EHR (Electronic Health Record)
Knowledge: Knowledge of medical terminology, medical abbreviations, and anatomy and physiology required.
Skills and Abilities: Critical Thinking, Verbal communication, Customer Service, Accuracy, Attention to Detail. Works well with others. Willingness to be a team player.
Wage Rate Range: $20.00 - $26.25/HR, based on experience
